Allocations

Allocations in Lens are used to ensure a user has access to the requested pool and workstation when they need it. There are two types of allocation, see below for more:

On-demand allocations

These are the most common type of allocation, and are created by users from the ‘Editor Centre’. By clicking one of the pools that they have access to, a new allocation will be created for them. This will assign a workstation to the allocation.

The created allocation will be exclusive to the user. This prevents other users from being assigned the workstation the allocation is for. This is true even if the user with the allocation is not connected to the workstation.

These allocations are usually released upon session disconnection, but this is configurable. See ‘Policies’ for more.

Ad-hoc allocations

These allocations are created by administrators for specific users. They provide administrators with the flexibility to create allocations ahead of time, with extra options such as the time and date the allocation is valid to and from.

For example, these can be used to provide a user with access to a pool but only on a specific day.
