Improving your connection
Having a reliable Internet connection is very important for having a good remote editing experience. There are many factors that affect your experience with the remote edit system, the main ones are listed below.
Stability
Measuring stability
The stability of your connection is one of the most important aspects of having a good remote editing experience, more so than having a fast connection. We measure stability by three main points:
Ping - How long it takes for the remote editing system to reply to your computer, measured in milliseconds.
Jitter - The variance between multiple ping test results, measured in milliseconds.
Packet loss - How many data packets have been lost or need to be resent, measured as a percentage.
Minimum requirements
For a good user experience, we recommend that your connection has no more than:
80ms ping
15ms jitter
Improving stability
There are a number of things that you can do to improve the stability of your connection:
Connect to your home router via Ethernet cable instead of WiFi
Disconnect from any VPN services
Stop any latency-intensive tasks streaming, gaming or video conferencing
Ensure that you are connecting within the same geographical region that the system is located in. For example, a remote edit system based in the UK will not perform as well if you connect from the USA.
Contact your Internet Service Provider to assist with troubleshooting. Fibre connections are often substantially more stable than telephone line connections.
Bandwidth
Measuring bandwidth
Your Internet connection’s available bandwidth dictates what quality video and audio you receive from the remote editing system, so having a suitable amount of bandwidth is important. The remote editing system automatically scales the quality based on how much bandwidth is available, but for the best experience, this should be fairly consistent.
Minimum requirements
For a good user experience, we recommend that your Internet connection has at least:
15Mbps of download bandwidth
1Mbps of upload bandwidth
Improving bandwidth
There are a number of things that you can do to improve the stability of your connection, some are easier than others:
Connect to your home router via Ethernet cable instead of WiFi
Disconnect from any VPN services
Stop any bandwidth-intensive tasks such as uploading/downloading files or streaming video
Contact your Internet Service Provider to assist with troubleshooting.
